My Camp Facts |
Harand Camp was founded in 1955 by Chicago actresses (and sisters) Sulie and Pearl Harand, and their husbands, Byron Friedman and Sam Gaffin, on the beautiful shores of Elkhart Lake Wisconsin. In 1990, Harand moved to Wayland Academy's Beaver Dam Campus, and, since 2005, is located on the grounds of Lake Geneva's Carthage College. Today, the camp is run by Sulie Harand, her daughter Judy Friedman Mooney, and Pearl's daughters Nora Gaffin Shore and Janice Gaffin Lovell.
Harand stresses a well-rounded camping experience, with half of the day dedicated to traditional camp activities like soccer, volleyball, and swimming, and the other half dedicated to the theatre arts. Indeed, Harand's "No Man Is An Island" philosophy extends from cabin and camp life to the stage. Every camper gets a chance to share lead roles in camp productions, as well as experience a more complimentary, chorus role.
Famous Harand alumni include Jeremy Piven (Entourage), Virginia Madsen (Sideways), and Billy Zane (Titanic), though many other alumni have gone on to notable careers in the entertainment industry as well. Notable Harand Camp songs include: "We Are Haranders", "No Man Is An Island, "Bless This Camp," and, of course anything from "Paint Your Wagon". Harand personalities who've transcended many camp generations include: Coach Levendowski, Errol & Fran Pearlman, Marty Rubenstein, Jeff "Weeve" Weaver, Jeff "Peppy" Pepowski, Josephine Black, Gordy and Greg Malis, Kenny Silverman, Estelle Nye, Jan Smalley, Dave Rush, and Fran Rush.

| I love this website. I so wish to come back to camp and learn it all over again. I loved every minute of it and it had lifted me and held me throughout my life. No man is an Island has become my personal theme song. I always remember Sulie singing it. I have never ever forgotten the words. I believe I was in Brigadoon the last year I went to camp as a camper. I used to love laying on the end of the dock at night with a blanket and pillow watching the stars when I was Waterfront Director. Those were the days. Look look look to the rainbow. | |

| Started by Rachel Baron and Jon Levitt, Aug. 2006: YOU KNOW YOU WENT TO HARAND CAMP IF... if you were born after 1945 and still own a steamer trunk if you think Culligan is the world's finest brand of bottled water if you associate different musicals with certain age groups if you cry whenever you hear somebody say "no man is an island If you wonder why it would ever take more than 3 weeks to stage a production of anything. If you feel a compulsion to put your chair on top of your table after you finish a meal. if you stare at the dishwasher in confusion looking for the push-through window. if you won't leave the dinner table until you get an OK from jeff weaver if you had 4 kids by the time you were 15... and got to give them back! if all of your clothes have name tag labels on the tags...even you underwear" if you laugh uproriously at the sight of golf pencils." if you get excited at the thought of spending time in Hell." if you don't feel like you've cleaned your room until you see a little slip of paper under the door if you celebrate your birthday by running around the table and then jump on a chair If you have 1,001 uses for duct tape and you don't work construction if you have your own muppet If you have war stories from Ultimate Frisbee if seafoam is your favorite color if your surpised when you go the theater and each character is only portrayed by actor if you look at a rehearsal schedule and are surprised when it takes more than a month. if you think billy zane is the greatest screen actor of the 20th century if you talk about jeremy piven and john cusack like they are close friends if you associate the phrase "summer camp" with watching mtv, eating out at chinese buffets, and having banquets If you think grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato if you think the prize for an olympic win is a sundae bar and feel cheated when all they give you for the win is a lousy medal | |

| Great website. some additional sons that I remember include: - I am a music doctor... - Head shoulders knees and toes... Almost all of the cabin songs for example: - P P P P O N D D D D E R O O O O O S A A Ponderosa, There's a cabin that you all should know, Down the road and right past rodeo. ( sang to the grease lightning tune) Will never forget crying to the 35 years song the last year at Elkhart Lake - allegro... There are so many! I also loved the consoler welcome songs. | |

| One more thing... What's your favorite Harand tune? Since we all learned hundreds at camp (thousands if you include pageant!), I'm sure there are many choices. But here are a few of mine: 1)No Man Is An Island/Bless This Camp (I'll call it a medley because you can't really sing one without the other.) 2)We Are Haranders 3)Anything from "Paint Your Wagon" 4)It's 30 Years (also known as "35 Years", etc...) 5)We've Had Moments of Cheers (aka "The 35 Year Song". Anyone at camp the last year at Elkhart should remember this one. I'll try and find it - I'm sure I have it on tape somewhere - and will post the audio on this page.) What are some of your favorites? Grey Squirrel? Sunshine Mountain? Noontime Is Here? Oh The Lord is Good To Me? (Or any mealtime song, for that matter.) This Is The Army? Post it here! | |

| Hello Haranders - welcome to MyCampFriends.com. T.J. Shanoff here ('85-'99), and I founded this website with Harand in mind. Hopefully we'll all be able to stay in touch on here and reminisce about all those great days in Elkhart Lake, Beaver Dam, and nowadays Kenosha! I'll be posting some photos of Elkhart on this page very soon - feel free to send me some jpegs if you have pics of camp you'd like to share: tj@mycampfriends.com. And tell all your camp friends to join! Because we all know that No Man Is An Island, right? | |
